Lancaster commemorative coin
Created by KML Designs to commemorate 85 years since the first flight of the Lancaster bomber.
The Avro Lancaster prototype, BT308, took its maiden flight on January 9, 1941. Flown by Captain Harry Albert "Sam" Brown from RAF Ringway (now Manchester Airport), the four-engine heavy bomber was developed from the earlier Avro Manchester. The successful flight proved the design's stability and power, leading to it becoming one of WWII's most effective bombers.
The aircraft was developed to address the limitations of the twin-engine Avro Manchester, featuring a redesigned, longer wing and increased engine capacity. The first flight in 1941 was a success, leading to 7,377 aircraft being produced throughout World War II.
